VISIT

Based in London, 100% Design is the UK's leading contemporary interiors event for the contract market, attracting key manufacturers, star designers and major specifiers from the UK and overseas. There is no other show that connects the worlds of architecture and design with innovative, contemporary interior products, creativity and an exciting mix of new and established talent.
I went to this exhibition yesterday, and it is amazing to see all these new ideas and concepts. I would really like to try and incorporate some of the designs that i saw into my work i just need to think how.

Throughout July i undertook a months work experience for the graphic design company, Butcher & Gundersen based in Chiswick, London. Butcher & Gundersen are a strategic branding, design and communications consultancy, with an integrated planning and research facility.
During my time there, i worked as part of their team generating and developing ideas for their clients. I worked on logos, letterheads and business cards as well as website designs.

Valencia 08

Valencia's City of Arts and Science is a truly mind-blowing confection of some of Europe's most awesome architecture. When i arrived on the site i was overwhelmed by just how big these buildings actually were. I am fascinated by architecture and design and that is why i am i trying to focus on writing my dissertation on such a topic.

EVALUATION

PPD2 Evaluation.

This last year has definitely taught me a lot about myself as a graphic designer and the way that I work in college. At the beginning of the year I was a little confused about what my intentions were and that this then meant that it took me a while to settle back into the working environment and get back into a routine. However, as the year has progressed I feel I have done so too myself.

I cannot afford to let my mind drift away from design practice over the forthcoming months. The two or three weeks that I spend doing work experience will help me to stay focussed, and may help me to decide where my practice takes me in the final year.

As the year has gone by my organisational skills have improved. This was one of my major flaws at the beginning of the year, and a major let down to my work. As I have been able to organise my work recently I have greatly benefited from this. It has enabled me to see the work that I have produced, and when it comes to group crits I have been able to get feedback whereas before no one could comment on it.

My knowledge of the Adobe creative suite, including Photoshop and Illustrator is expanding everyday as I am learning new techniques, and this is where I see one of my strengths to be. Other strengths include my ideas and the thinking behind them, but where I let myself down is the development of them. This probably comes down to my time management, which is something that I have been working on over the past year, but definitely needs to improve. The last couple of months have seen me using action plans, timetabling my work in so that I know what needs to get done and setting myself deadlines which have all helped me to keep as up to date with the work as possible. This is something that I will maintain going in to the final year.

As a graphic designer I intend to create work that not only inspires people but also gets them thinking in a new way. At the minute I cannot say where I want to be when I have graduated or what working environment I want to be part of. Hopefully next year will see me producing even better work.

The work that I have produced is mainly computer based and I would like to get away from this and explore other aspects of design. So over the summer I will continue to research into graphic design studios and existing work to see where I may see myself in the future.

Sagmeister

As part of my designed identity module, i have been looking at putting text on the body and face. Stefan Sagmeister's work for Lou Reed's album cover was really interesting. I had been trying to place type on the face, and create an image of myslef using type but had not been very successful.

This website is full of inspiration. Comprising all areas of graphic design, it is one website that i keep going back to look at.
Put together by graphic designer and photographer, Fabian Barral, this website shows the work of all his favourite graphic designers, photographers, artists and designers.

Nick Shermans work appealed to me because of the way he works. He covers a number of different design aspects including both photography and type, both areas of which i am interested in.

online journals

abi massey

abimassey.com

Abi Masseys' photography entitled 'Bricks and mortar' are really interesteting compositions. The use of perspective, looking up at buildings has inspired me to create my own images in the past, and i way of working that i enjoy. They reminded me of some of David Foldvaris' work that i have also looked at.

This mans life

The work by James Meller is some that i find extremely interesting to look at. His photographs from around the world really appeal to me as his use of perspective is one of which i have tried to focus upon in some of my works. The way he uses black and white photography adds a real atmosphere in his work.
